Study for the Last Egoistic Performance is a theatre exhibition about life and afterlife of a theatre piece and about the death and rebirth of (the) theatre author(s).
Study for the Last Egoistic Performance is a theatre exhibition where four actors, a scenographer and a video artist exhibit twenty (20) different re-interpretations of the four (4) performances from Mare Bulc’s No History / Know History series that Mare Bulc presented in the 2003 and 2004.
Study for the Last Egoistic Performance is the actor’s, video artist’s and scenographer’s new intimate view of the work and the topics Mare Bulc was dealing with in his past work. Recycled and reinterpreted by new artists, the topics - ‘artist’s sacrifice for the art’, ‘the system of the art system’ etc. - are re-presented in front of the (gallery) audience.
Study for the Last Egoistic Performance is taking the form of an exhibition – a theatre exhibition - with a constant stream of live performance and exhibited video, photographs, written documents, costumes and props (of the same performance pieces taking place live). Theatre exhibition is open four (4) hours a day, for (max.) three (3) days in a row. The audience can enter and exit the exhibition space freely.
As the director of the Study for the Last Egoistic Performance, Mare Bulc wanted to be less (of a) theatre director and more (like) a curator. His work with actors, a video artist and a scenographer was more about talk and discussion, and less about “directing them”. In the beginning he partly instructed them but afterwards he let them find their own interpretations and re-interpretations, in order to re-invent his old performances through new and at the same time re-cycled material. At the end of the process Mare Bulc arranged the material in a new unique exhibition – theatre exhibition: Study for the Last Egoistic Performance.
A four year research project
Study for the Last Egoistic Performance is the next-to-last event in the four year research project No History / Know History. Its author Mare Bulc made it a “side project” to his studies of theatre directing at the Ljubljana Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT). The four year project is a platform for the author to contemplate about contemporary theatre and to confront it with the classical drama theatre, as it is being taught at the AGRFT. The author examines the areas and strategies on the borderline between theatre, performance art, and visual art, as well as the system, history and authorship of art. He will conclude the research with the performance titled Last Egoistic Performance at the end of year 2006.
